Since the two renowned British chemists, B. A. Adams and E. L. Holmes, pioneered the first synthetic organic ion exchange resin based on phenol–formaldehyde polycondensates, ion exchange (IX) technology has continuously evolved, transforming modern water treatment.

In the 2000s, ion exchange resins began to be widely used in household water treatment systems in China, primarily as hardness removers in regenerable softeners and disposable filter cartridges. However, issues such as color leaching, unpleasant odors and tastes, and residual chemicals occasionally impacted product performance and user experience.
